De Ultimate Assam Laksa KL/PJ ?

The One Man Noodles Wonder of PJ

Pasar Malams, (the ubiquitious & distinctively popular colorful Malaysian open air night markets ) are a delight for shopoholics and food connoisseurs alike, & da occassional casual open air teenaged Romeos and randy old men, for when have you not come across all those delectable tight jeans loose t-shits SYTs haggling stylishly over the multicoloured bras and red black G-strings/panties with that remarkable showy know-it-all & oldish looking mamasan?

They not only provide you with an endless choice of cheap groceries, textiles and household items but also entice & entertain all with an incredible spread and variety of snacks, cookies, desserts, fruits and other original hawker temptations + de occassional sideshows from various established Malaysian gastronomical favourites such as nasi campur (Malay rice), ayam goreng (fried chickens), noodles ( of all kinds ), curry rice, multiple chops, soups, cakes, desserts etc etc including fresh vegetables and meats.

Indeed, some of the best hawker fares are found in just such a place, the inevitable subject of this post. Does this name sound familiar ?
Look carefully....probably it does, to many !

This is the Chinaman (Malaysian Guinness Book of Records BSG nominee ) from Penang ( v think ) and his 2 assistants.

Parked in front of KTZ Cafe SS2 PJ on Mondays ( & somewhere else other days )

A plain looking but really incredible scrawny bespectacled old young man, the enviable object of mouthwatering lust for many an impatient gluttonous man and salivating woman. De classic Chinaman in a class of his own...impervious to everything...Xcept his strands of slippery noodles...and fish flakes...

People wait for many long minutes ( & hours ) for him to show up around 6 pm in his tiny white van and then another many minutes to see him set up his veritable 1 man 2 helpers kitchen and 5 & a half persons dining table....and....

...in .....his trademark few inches taller but all important specialist stool which probably is his inimitable goodluck charm ...
...then da show begins, with patiently waiting mouth- wide-open gasping crowds....and
admiring fellow pasar malam vendors left & right !

For those choosing dining- in... please obtain Q ticket hung on van...( a mile long )

but ...for the massive takeaways please Q in line beside van ( 15 to 20 people l o n g )

For this...meagre greeny and curly thing ? ....u bet...

Let da Magician pour on da spellbinding soup of fish (kembong) flakes, floating in a pungently aromatic divine recipe of tamarind paste, lemongrass (serai), chilis, mint leaves, lettuces and then some, it is no wonder...
this Penang inspired dish( de numero uno) is creating waves in the pasar malams every few nights...

Slurrp this into your anxious anticipating waiting lips and feel da Xtraordinary temptuous sweet sour hot biting taste...
Many claim this fabulous Penang Assam Laksa is the best there is, in da whole of Klang Valley ...whether sweet...minus the pineapple.. this and that... or not !
.
.
V r tempted to agree.... how about u ?

The broth looks a bit watery and not dark, unlike what I used to have in Pg. But the look may fool me, and based on the ppl lining up to eat, it must be darn good! Any chance I might find it in Seri Kembangan?
Jackson said…
ok. Im gonna look for laksa for lunch later!!

I normally buy from the other van further down the road, next to lok lok and sugar cane van. Any difference or not?

soon V r gonna bump into u !

Have tasted the laska but find it a wee sweet. Too bad these assam laksa fellas are too generous with sugar.

I prefer going to the little shop in 1 Utama (new wing, opposite giant supermarket) where I can wallop the whole huge bowl (with lotsa fish chunks). It's tastier and not as sweet.

Tried it at Chow Yang Pasar Malam on Thu. Real good, even better than the old man at SS24, Taman Megah pasar malam. I'll go back for more since it is more or less the same as making at home with all the real ingredients. Would be better if there's pineapple, mint leaves, bunga kantan, and more onions and cucumber.
